We would like to suggest a few unique places in Krakow, to show you the rich artistic and cultural offerings of Krakow. We are convinced that everyone will find something - lovers of wandering the urban landscape as well those enamored with historical monuments, and admirers of art and contemporary entertainment.

Amber Museum

Next to the Main Market Square, more precisely at number two Świętego Jana Street, there is a unique place, that is worth a visit – the Museum of Amber. Here, you will find a collection of the most beautiful specimens of this beautiful stone formed into jewelry, everyday objects, and true works of art. If you have amber jewelry, an additional attraction will undoubtedly be the Amber Laboratory, where you can check the authenticity of your amber with a spectrometer. Admission to the Amber Museum is free of charge.

Wawel

Located a mere 750 meters from the Old Town Square is Wawel. Wawel is a complex of buildings and structures that date as far back as the 9thcentury. Amongst these buildings is the Royal Castle that served for centuries as the residence of the kings of Poland and as a symbol of Polish statehood, the Castle is now one of the country’s premier art museums. Be sure to check out the base of Wawel hill on the banks of the Wisła River where legend has it a fearsome dragon once lived.

Jan Matejko House and Museum

Jan Matejko was Poland’s most famous painter, sometimes referred to as the “national painter” and a resident of Krakow. His house located at 41 Floriańska Street, now transformed into a museum and is one of the ten branches of the National Museum in Krakow. A must visit for history and art aficionados.

We also encourage you to visit the Main Building of the National Museum, which is located at number one Aleja 3 Maja Street, where you can visit three very interesting galleries in one building and view works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci. The Gallery of Artistic Crafts with almost 4,000 exhibits including fabrics, clothes, furniture, ceramics and glass. The local collection dates back to the early Middle Ages and the second half of the 20th century. In the Gallery “Arms and Uniforms in Poland” you will see nearly 2,000 pieces of memorabilia related to the military. All these exhibits date back to the Middle Ages through the Second World War. The third permanent gallery of the Main Building contains the Gallery of 20th century Polish Art. At present, it houses an exhibition on the works of Stanisław Wyspiański, presenting the collection of this versatile artist. After the completion of Wyspiański's project, the gallery will be changed to reflect 20th and 21st century Art.

The Cloth Hall

The Cloth Hall, located on the Main Square of Krakow, is not just a great place to grab a coffee and shop for traditional Polish crafts but it also houses one of the oldest branches of the Krakow National Museum. The Cloth Hall houses the Gallery of Polish Art of the 19th century, famous for holding the largest collection in Poland - you can admire works of art by Jan Matejko, Marcello Bacciarelli, Jacek Malczewski and many other outstanding painters.

Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow, or MOCAK for short, is located on a demolished part of the factory of Oskar Schindler about three kilometers from the Old Town Square. The focus of MOCAK is to present and support contemporary art and artists, in particular art from the last two decades. As the exhibits change regularly it is best to check the website for details. Admission is free on Tuesdays!
